2010 Volkswagen New Beetle

Car & Driver Overview:
The New Beetle was introduced so long ago it’s almost an old Beetle. The cute shape and retro interior styling still appeal, but the five-cylinder engine is a party pooper, and the car isn’t as entertaining as the shape suggests. Still, it’s quite practical, save for an oddly shaped trunk.

Highs
Like the original, the shape retains its appeal; lots of head room; usable rear seat.

Lows
Droning five-cylinder engine, limited powertrain options, just one trim level.

What's New
Introduced in 1998; some refreshing in the interim; minor changes for 2010.

Behind The Wheel
Long dash compromises vision. The suspension yields a nice ride, but responses and the engine are so-so. At least there’s a stick shift.
